Matthew 6:17, "And when you fast,"
Daniel 10:12, "Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words."
Because you fasted and prayed, three things (at least) are sure to happen:
1) Purification - fasting doesn't make you Holy, but it can reveal and maybe even help remove the things that make you unholy. It clears out and cleans up the disorder of the soul.
2) Revelation - as purification takes place, the "real" matters come to the surface. Be they hinderances, fears, dreams and heart-felt desires; fasting cleans the window of the soul in order to see better.
It also reveals who or what has been "King". What you find it nearly impossible to abstain from during your fast, most likely has been you Ruler.
3) Determination - when there is clarity, acceleration to a known goal is possible.
Fasting makes you lighter, both physically and emotionally. It, in some hard-to-describe-way, gives you the courage to pursue with almost reckless abandonment your goal or the thing that is now revealed to you.
